Morpheus8 Recovery, Day by Day: What to Expect and When

Recovery after Morpheus8 varies with the area treated, treatment settings and your individual skin response. This guide describes possible stages of recovery rather than a timetable everyone will follow. Follow your personalised aftercare instructions, and contact us if symptoms worsen, are not settling as expected or concern you.

The Day Itself

You may leave with skin that looks flushed and feels warm, tight or slightly sore as the numbing wears off. Small needle marks and a little pinpoint bleeding can occur. The appearance and intensity of these reactions vary with your skin and the treatment settings used.

Swelling can start on the day and may be more noticeable around the eyes if this area was treated. Plan a quiet evening, use only the aftercare products we’ve recommended, avoid makeup and skip the hot shower.

The First Few Days

The initial warmth should ease, while redness and swelling can take longer to settle. Recovery varies with your skin, the area treated and the settings used, so someone else’s experience may look different from yours.

What matters is how your symptoms are progressing, rather than whether you match a particular day on a timeline. Redness and swelling should gradually settle. If they are worsening, are not improving as expected, or concern you, contact us for advice.

Increasing pain, spreading redness or heat, discharge, or a fever need prompt clinical assessment. Don’t wait for the next stage of this guide before seeking help.

Considering Morpheus8?

Our expert practitioners will assess your skin and build a plan tailored to your goals.

Days Three To Seven, The Healing Stages That Worry People Most

As the initial redness settles, you may notice small dots or a faint grid across the treated skin. The surface can feel dry or rough, and small superficial crusts may develop. These changes can occur during recovery, but not everyone experiences them.

Leave your skin alone as much as possible this week, apart from gentle cleansing and your recommended aftercare. No scrubs, no exfoliating acids, no flannel, no picking, however satisfying it looks. Interfering with healing can increase the risk of uneven pigmentation, which may take months rather than days to fade.

Keep it clean, keep it out of the sun, and keep your hands off it.

The marks should gradually settle. Contact us if they worsen, become painful or blistered, or are not improving as expected. A grid pattern alone cannot tell you whether your skin is healing normally, so please ask if you’re unsure.

Follow the makeup timing in your personalised aftercare instructions. If we’ve advised restarting from 48 hours, only do so if the skin has healed sufficiently, with no open or weeping areas. Use clean brushes and a gentle formula your skin tolerates.

Week Two

By the second week, you may look more settled, although recovery varies.

You might not feel normal. Skin can stay slightly tight, or oddly smooth in patches, and if you’re looking closely you’ll spot things nobody else will. The swelling may still be there, particularly under the eyes and along the jaw, and if we treated your neck, that tends to lag behind your face by a few days.

Nothing much is happening on the surface at this point, which is a bit unsatisfying. A great deal is happening underneath.

Weeks Three To Twelve, When The Result Turns Up

Underneath, your skin is doing the thing you paid for. The heat delivered at depth stimulates collagen remodelling, and that is slow work. It doesn’t arrive with the redness leaving. It accumulates.

You may begin to notice firmer, smoother skin over the following weeks, though it tends to be a gradual dawning rather than a moment. Often someone else spots it first.

Around three months is a useful point to assess the change, and if you’re on a course of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, improvements may accumulate over the course, so the real assessment comes a few months after your final appointment.

This is why we ask people not to judge the result at week one. Week one is swelling and healing, and swelling can make skin look temporarily plumper and tighter than it will settle at. Judge it at three months, ideally against a photograph taken before you started, because faces change slowly and memory is unreliable.

When To Phone Us Instead Of Googling

Everything above is ordinary. These are not, and they want a person rather than a search engine.

  • Blistering, weeping, or skin that looks burned rather than grazed
  • Pain that climbs after the first couple of days instead of easing
  • Redness, heat and swelling spreading in one particular spot, especially with any discharge
  • A temperature
  • Cold sore blistering, if you’re prone to them
  • The treatment grid still clearly visible well past the first fortnight

If we treated you, just message the clinic. None of us mind being asked, and we would far rather look at something that turns out to be nothing than have you sit at home worrying about it.

If we treated you, contact the clinic. None of us mind being asked, and we would far rather look at something that turns out to be nothing than have you sit at home worrying.

For worsening pain, spreading redness or heat, discharge or a fever, seek prompt clinical advice. If you cannot reach us or the clinic that treated you, contact your GP urgently or NHS 24 on 111 when your GP is closed. Don’t wait for a message reply if you are getting worse.

“Leave it alone. Almost every pigmentation problem I see after needling came from someone trying to help their skin along.”

Aftercare

Most of this is straightforward, and all of it is easier if you know it before the day rather than reading it in the car on the way home.

The first 48 hours

Keep it simple and follow the cleansing and moisturising instructions we’ve given you. Use only the products we’ve recommended, with lukewarm water and clean fingertips when cleansing. Leave your usual active skincare out for now.

  • No makeup
  • No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms or hot yoga
  • Nothing that makes you flush or sweat, including the gym
  • Don’t touch your face unnecessarily, and wash your hands when you do
  • Clean pillowcase, and prop yourself up if the swelling is bothering you
  • Skip the alcohol, which makes swelling and flushing worse
  • Cool compresses help on the first day if you feel hot and tight, but never ice directly on the skin

From 48 hours

Follow the makeup timing in your personalised aftercare instructions. If we’ve advised restarting from 48 hours, only do so once the skin has healed sufficiently, with no open or weeping areas. Use clean brushes and a gentle formula your skin tolerates.
Start sunscreen when advised in your aftercare instructions, and use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above. Until then, be particularly careful about shade, protective clothing and avoiding direct sun. Keep protecting your skin throughout recovery. Pigmentation changes can follow inflammation from treatment; sun exposure, picking and irritating skincare can increase the risk, but changes can occur even with careful aftercare.

The first week to ten days

  • No scrubs, no exfoliating acids, no retinoids
  • No facials, peels, laser or other treatments for four weeks
  • Vitamin C may be reintroduced around day seven if your skin has settled and this agrees with your aftercare instructions. Wait longer if it remains irritated, and stop if the product stings.

After ten days

If your skin has settled, bring your actives back one at a time rather than all at once, starting with whatever your skin tolerates best. Retinoids last. If something stings or looks angry, stop it and wait until your skin has settled before trying again. Introducing three things on the same day means you’ll never know which one your skin objected to.

Keep the daily SPF going regardless, particularly if you’re prone to pigmentation.

Your next session, if you’re on a course, is four to six weeks after this one.

If you’re not sure

Ask us. That includes the things that feel too small to bother anyone with, which are usually the things people get wrong.

What Burst Changes, And What It Doesn’t

We use the Burst handpiece, which delivers radiofrequency to several depths within a single pulse rather than one depth per pass.

This can reduce treatment time, depending on your treatment plan. Fewer passes over the same area, less time in the chair, and treatment planned in layers rather than one level at a time.

What it doesn’t do is skip the healing. You should still plan for recovery time, which varies with the area treated and settings used, and if anyone offers you a version of this treatment with no downtime, they’re describing a marketing position rather than a device.

Your First Session Versus Your Third

People often expect the second and third to be easier. Usually, they’re roughly the same.

The reason is that the settings are chosen for what your skin needs, not held back for a first attempt. If anything, later sessions can be treated slightly more assertively once we’ve seen how you healed from the first, so plan for a similar week each time rather than assuming it gets progressively lighter.

Visible improvements may build over the course, but the timing and degree of change vary. A few months after your final session is a useful point to assess your results.

The Short Version

Day one you look sunburnt. The first few days you’re pink and puffy. Around days three to seven, you may notice small dots or a grid pattern. Follow your aftercare instructions and contact us if the marks worsen or aren’t settling.

By week two, your skin may look more settled. Around three months is a useful point to assess your results.

These timings are a guide; how your symptoms are progressing matters more than matching a particular day. If you’re outside them, or anything on the warning-sign list above applies, contact us and follow the advice in that section. We’d far rather answer a question about nothing than have you sitting at home working yourself up.

Thinking About Morpheus8?

The only way to know whether it’s right for you is a proper conversation with someone who can look at your skin and tell you honestly what to expect from it.

That’s where we start with everyone. We’ll assess what’s actually going on, explain what Morpheus8 can and can’t do for your face specifically, and if something else would serve you better we’ll say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people go back to work the next day looking like they’ve caught the sun. The stage that can give you away is days three to seven, when a treatment pattern may be visible on your skin. If you have something in the diary you care about, leave two weeks clear, although some people take longer to settle.

Red, warm and tight, much like a moderate sunburn, with tiny pinpricks where the needles went in. Swelling starts the same day and is more noticeable if we’ve treated around your eyes.

Swelling varies with the treatment depth, energy used, area treated and your individual response. It should gradually settle. If it worsens, isn’t improving as expected or concerns you, contact us rather than waiting for a particular number of days.

Yes. Tiny crusts appear at each needle site within the first few days. Most people find they lift on their own over the following week, though InMode’s own documentation allows up to three weeks for them to shed completely. Leave them alone, even when they itch. Picking at them is the main cause of pigmentation problems afterwards.

From 48 hours, provided your skin has healed sufficiently and this matches your personalised aftercare advice. Avoid open or weeping areas, and use clean brushes and a formula your skin tolerates.

Give it 48 hours, and longer if your skin still feels hot or looks irritated. Heat, sweat and flushing all work against skin that’s closing thousands of tiny channels.

Around seven to ten days, and bring it back last rather than first. Vitamin C can usually go back in around day seven. Introduce one thing at a time so you know what your skin is reacting to.

Most people notice firmer, smoother skin around six to eight weeks, with the fuller change at about three months. On a course of three, judge it properly a few months after your final session.

Usually much the same. The settings are chosen for what your skin needs rather than eased in gradually, so plan for a similar week each time.

Often, yes. Neck skin is thinner and tends to hold swelling for a few days longer, so if your face has settled and your neck hasn’t, that ordering is expected.
