THE TREATMENT
Masseter Botox Treatment
Masseter Botox is a prescription treatment used to relax the jaw muscle responsible for clenching and grinding. For many patients, this muscle becomes overactive over time, leading to symptoms such as jaw tightness, facial tension, headaches, and tooth wear.
By carefully reducing the activity of the masseter muscle, this treatment can ease discomfort, protect the teeth, and help the jaw feel more settled and relaxed.
Some patients also notice a softer jawline as the muscle reduces in strength, but the main goal is almost always improved comfort and relief from clenching rather than a cosmetic change.
Who is Suitable
Masseter Botox is most effective for patients whose jaw tension or grinding is caused by an overactive chewing muscle. It may be a good option if your jaw feels tense or overactive, your dentist has mentioned signs of grinding, or you want a non-surgical way to reduce jaw strain. It cannot be performed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Consultation
Every treatment begins with a face to face consultation. We assess whether jaw clenching or tension is coming from an overactive masseter muscle and whether Botox is the most appropriate option. If treatment is suitable, a prescription will be provided in line with UK regulations.

How it works
Targeted. Controlled. Effective.
Botulinum toxin works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause the masseter muscle to contract with full force. When injected precisely into the muscle at the angle of the jaw, the muscle is allowed to relax, reducing clenching pressure, easing tension, and over time allowing the muscle to reduce in bulk. Results develop gradually over 4 to 6 weeks. The treatment takes around 20 minutes, requires no anaesthetic, and you can return to your day immediately.
Day 1 to 2
Mild redness or swelling at the injection sites may occur. This is temporary and usually settles quickly.
2 Weeks
Jaw comfort is usually clearer and chewing feels easier.
4 to 8 Weeks
Lower face looks slimmer as the muscle reduces in bulk.
3 to 4 Months
Results gradually wear off. Most patients book their next appointment within this timeframe to maintain results.
What to Expect
Aftercare
Wrinkle relaxing injections require no downtime. You can return to your normal day immediately after treatment, with a few simple guidelines to follow in the first 24 hours.
Immediately After Treatment
You may notice small raised areas at the injection sites that settle within a few minutes. Mild redness or tenderness is normal and resolves quickly. Avoid touching or massaging the treated areas for the rest of the day.
First 24 Hours
Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and lying flat for 4 hours after treatment. Do not apply pressure to the treated area. Alcohol is best avoided for the remainder of the day.
When Will I See Results?
Results develop gradually over 7 to 14 days as the muscle activity reduces. A free review appointment is offered at 2 to 3 weeks if any area requires adjustment or topping up. Do not judge your results before 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions Answered
Does Masseter Botox affect chewing?
Masseter Botox does not stop you from chewing normally. The aim is simply to relax an overactive jaw muscle, not remove its function. Most patients notice no change to everyday eating, although very hard or chewy foods may feel slightly different for the first week or two.
Will Masseter Botox change my smile?
When performed correctly, Masseter Botox should not change your smile. The injections are placed carefully into the chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw, away from the muscles responsible for facial expression. We assess your anatomy carefully to ensure treatment remains precise and safe.
How long does Masseter Botox last?
Results typically last around 4 months, although this can vary depending on muscle strength and how strongly you clench or grind. Many patients find the effects last longer after repeated treatments as the muscle gradually becomes less overactive.
Is Masseter Botox safe for teeth grinding?
Yes. Masseter Botox is commonly used to help reduce jaw clenching and teeth grinding. By relaxing the muscle, it can ease tension, reduce discomfort, and help protect the teeth from ongoing pressure and wear. A consultation is always needed to confirm it is the right option for you.
Can I have Masseter Botox during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. Masseter Botox cannot be carried out during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or currently breastfeeding, please let us know at your consultation and we can discuss when treatment may be appropriate for you.
When will I see results?
Masseter Botox works gradually. Most patients begin to notice improvement within 1 to 2 weeks, with the full effect developing over 4 to 6 weeks. This is normal as the muscle slowly relaxes over time rather than changing immediately.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are usually mild and temporary. The most common include slight tenderness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Occasionally patients may notice temporary jaw fatigue or mild chewing weakness, particularly in the first few weeks. We explain all risks in full during your consultation.
Can Masseter Botox help with headaches?
Yes, for headaches that are linked to jaw clenching or tension in the masseter muscle. By reducing the activity of the muscle, many patients notice a significant reduction in tension headaches and facial pain. It is not a treatment for all headache types and a consultation is needed to assess whether jaw strain is a likely contributing factor.
How many units of Botox are needed for the masseter?
The number of units varies depending on the size and strength of the muscle and the specific product being used. Stronger or larger muscles typically require more units to achieve a noticeable result. The exact amount will be confirmed during your consultation once we have assessed the muscle.
