What is Acne Scarring
Acne scarring develops when the skin’s deeper layers are damaged during an inflammatory breakout. As the skin heals, it may lay down too little collagen, creating a depressed or pitted scar, or too much, leading to a raised or thickened area. The most common type seen in clinic is atrophic scarring, which presents as ice pick, rolling or boxcar depressions across the skin surface.
Scarring is not inevitable, but it is more likely after prolonged or severe acne, or when breakouts are picked or squeezed. Even after the acne itself has resolved, scarring can remain as a lasting reminder and a persistent source of self-consciousness.”
