Skin Concerns

Enlarged Pores

Enlarged or visible pores are one of the most common skin concerns we see in clinic, yet they are often misunderstood. While pore size is largely determined by genetics, their appearance can be significantly improved with the right clinical treatment and home skincare routine.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONCERN

What Causes Enlarged Pores

Pores are the openings of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands on the skin surface. They cannot be opened or closed, but their appearance changes depending on the amount of oil they produce and the quality of the surrounding skin. When pores are enlarged, they are more visible and can give the skin a rough or unrefined appearance.

The main causes of enlarged pores are excess sebum production, which stretches the pore opening, and a gradual loss of skin elasticity with age, which reduces the skin’s ability to support the pore walls and keep them appearing tight. Sun damage accelerates both processes.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Pores on the nose and cheeks that are clearly visible up close

Skin that looks unrefined or textured rather than smooth

Pores that appear larger by midday as oil builds up

Foundation that settles into pores and emphasises rather than conceals them

Pores that have become more visible with age and loss of firmness

Blackheads or congestion that sit within enlarged pores

Pores that have worsened following years of oily or acne-prone skin

Treatments for this concern

Recommended Treatments

Reducing the appearance of enlarged pores requires addressing both excess oil and the loss of skin elasticity around them. These are the treatments we recommend.
