What Causes Jowls
Jowls develop as the skin and soft tissue of the lower face descend below the border of the jawline. The result is a softening of the jaw edge and the formation of fullness either side of the chin, creating what many patients describe as a change in their overall facial shape that makes them look older than they feel.
Jowling is caused by a combination of factors: reduced skin elasticity, loss of volume in the mid and lower face that removes the structural support holding the tissue in place, and the effect of gravity over time. It tends to become more noticeable from the mid-forties onwards and can progress gradually.
