What Causes Marionette Lines
Marionette lines run vertically from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin, and they get their name from the resemblance to the hinged mouth of a puppet. They form as the skin and soft tissue around the lower face lose volume and support, allowing the corners of the mouth to turn downward.
Loss of volume in the cheeks and jawline often contributes to marionette lines becoming more pronounced, since the structures that once held the lower face up are no longer providing the same support. Genetics, sun exposure and natural changes in collagen and elastin all play a role in how early and how deeply these lines develop.
