What Causes Perioral Lines
Perioral lines develop as the skin around the mouth loses collagen and elastin, combined with the repeated muscle movement involved in speaking, smiling and pursing the lips. Over time this repeated motion etches fine vertical lines into the thin, delicate skin above and below the lips.
While smoking accelerates this process significantly, contributing to the common nickname, perioral lines also develop naturally with age in people who have never smoked. Sun exposure and genetics play a role too, which is why the severity can vary widely between people of the same age.
