What are Seborrhoeic Keratoses
Seborrhoeic keratoses are common, benign growths that develop on the skin’s surface. They become increasingly common from midlife onwards and tend to run in families. They can appear almost anywhere on the body, most often on the chest, back, scalp and face, and typically start flat before thickening into a raised, waxy or warty texture over time.
The exact cause isn’t fully understood, though unlike age spots, they aren’t linked to sun exposure. They’re entirely benign, don’t indicate any underlying health condition, and don’t need to be removed for medical reasons, though many patients choose treatment when they catch on clothing, feel rough, or affect confidence.
As some skin lesions can resemble each other in early stages, any growth that changes shape, bleeds or looks different from the rest should always be assessed by a clinician.
