Face Concerns
Teeth Grinding and Jaw Tension
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching are more common than many people realise, and the effects go beyond dental wear. Persistent jaw tension can cause headaches, facial pain and disrupted sleep. Botulinum toxin injections offer an effective solution, reducing muscle activity, relieving discomfort and improving the appearance of the lower face.
UNDERSTANDING THE CONCERN
What is Bruxism
Bruxism, the grinding or clenching of teeth, is extremely common, particularly in people under stress, and often occurs during sleep without the individual being aware. Over time it causes significant wear on the teeth, jaw pain, headaches and muscle fatigue, and can widen the lower face by causing the masseter muscles to hypertrophy.
When it is overworked through chronic clenching, it thickens and enlarges, squaring the jawline and sometimes creating discomfort that patients assume is dental or skeletal in origin. Our guide to Masseter Botox explains how the treatment calms that overactivity and what to expect week by week.
Signs your jaw muscle may be overworking
Waking with jaw pain, headaches or facial tension
A jaw that feels tight or tired by the end of the day
Teeth that have become worn, chipped or sensitive over time
A square or wide lower face caused by enlarged jaw muscles
Clenching or grinding that your dentist has flagged
Headaches that seem to originate from the jaw or temples
Discomfort when chewing or opening the mouth wide
Recommended Treatments
Botulinum toxin injected into the masseter muscle is a well-established and effective treatment for bruxism and jaw tension. This is the treatment we use.
