What Causes Under-Eye Hollows

The under-eye area is one of the first places where ageing becomes visible. As the fat pad that supports the lower eyelid diminishes over time, a hollow develops between the lower lid and the cheek, creating a shadow that makes people look tired and older than they feel.

This hollowing is sometimes accompanied by a darkening of the skin beneath the eye, which can be caused by the shadow itself, by thinning of the overlying skin revealing the blood vessels below, or by genuine pigmentation in the area.
